A glimpse of light for 500 schoolchildren in the “City of Light”
A gift in kind from care for kids has brought a ray of light to the children of a community in Nuwara Eliya, in the heart of Sri Lanka. Donations consisting essentially of books, exercise books and writing implements, but also including clothing, toys and sweets, were distributed to over 500 children. M+W Zander staff member Sriskantharajah Sivapragasan, who is of Sri Lankan origin himself, was there in person to look after the distribution of the goods, to a value of 5,000 Euros, in February 2006.
By this donation, care for kids continues the aid to Sri Lanka that M+W Zander staff launched at the end of 2004 as a spontaneous aid action in response to the tsunami disaster. That action turned out to be the catalyst for the foundation of care for kids in 2005.
Nuwara Eliya (pronounced: Nureliya) is a little town in central Sri Lanka, situated at about 2,000 metres altitude, in a magnificent setting surrounded by mountains. It was founded in the 19th century as a rest station for the British, and its name translates as "The City above the Clouds" or, more poetically, "The City of Light".
